New Promising Drugs Help Fight Alzheimer’s
June 11, 2008
New York (dbTechno) - According to a new study released, there is a new class of drugs which may be effective in treating Alzheimer’s disease. The drugs are called gamma-secretase modulators.
This new class of drugs works by reducing production of long amyloid beta proteins. These lead to amyloid plaque which is a major factor in the development of Alzheimer’s.
These drugs, also known as GSMs, works in ways never before seen.
The team of 29 researchers from four nations were led by Prof. Todd Golde, Department of Neuroscience at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
They have stated that these GSMs also increase production of shorter pieces of the same amyloid protein, which can actually help prevent Alzheimer’s.
The study has been published in the journal Nature and has shown that this new class of drugs, GSMs, may prove to be highly-effective in the fight against Alzheimer’s.
