Traveler’s diarrhea causes millions of people to get sick each and every year, but this new vaccine could help prevent many of these illnesses.

The U.S. biotechnology company developed the new skin patch which is aimed at travelers.

According to the results of a clinical trial, the vaccine has shown great promise. For the study they tested it on 170 travelers who were going to Mexico and Guatemala. What they found was 3 out of the 59 people who were given the vaccine suffered moderate to severe diarrhea, compared to 23 of 111 who were given a placebo to take.

Only 2% of those who used the patch experienced serious bouts of illness, compared to 11% who did not use the patch.

The study has been published in the Lancet.
