FDA Adds States To Safe List For Salmonella Tomatoes
June 16, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has added both New Mexico and Indiana to the safe list for tomatoes, ruling out the possibility that either of these two states are the source of the salmonella outbreak. A Mexican state was also added to the list.
In total, the FDA has cleared 37 states to this point, including Puerto Rico as well as northern Florida.
Countries including Israel and Guatemala have also been deemed to be safe.
In Mexico, the state of Baja California was deemed to have safe tomatoes.
Over the weekend it was reported that the FDA was looking closely at both Florida and Mexico as possible sources of the salmonella outbreak which has gotten 228 people sick since April.
Mexico has been getting upset over how long it has taken the FDA to clear the country, as they will meet with the FDA Monday to talk about how they can speed up the process so the country is fully cleared.
