Weight Loss Surgery Cuts Cancer Risk In Obese Patients
June 19, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new Canadian study, obese patients who go through bariatric surgery to lose weight, also reduce their risk of cancer.
Researchers studied data from around 6,800 patients for the study, which was carried out at Montreal’s McGill University.
What they found was that patients who went through the weight-loss operation reduced their risk of developing cancer by 80%, compared to those obese people who did not get the surgery.
The incidences of breast cancer were found to be reduced by 85%, while colon cancer was reduced by 70%.
Researchers believe that this may be due to the lost fat cells, which can lead to the development of cancers.
The findings were presented on Wednesday at the annual meeting of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery in Washington, D.C.
