Medicare Health Providers Owe $2 Billion In Back Taxes
June 20, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), health care providers who collect payments from Medicare owe the government over $2 billion in back taxes.
The GAO found that in total, more than 27,000 establishments consisting of hospitals, nursing homes, etc. all were part of a scam where they collected Medicare payments in 2006, but failed to follow the proper tax system.
This number represents 6% of all Medicare health providers which have served over 40 million people.
The total amount in terms of Medicare payments paid out to them equals to $402 billion.
This investigation follows past concerns in other GAO reports which show that billions of dollars are not being paid to the government.
