Anesthesia May Increase Pain After Surgery
June 24, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - U.S. researchers have come out and revealed in a new study that general anesthesia during surgery may increase a patient’s level of pain following the surgery.
Anesthesia drugs are used quite often during surgery to keep pain for patients to a minimum.
Researchers have warned though that they make nerves far more sensitive.
This means that once a patient wakes up, they may experience inflammation and a greater level of pain than if they did not receive anesthesia.
The study was carried out by Gerard Ahern of Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington.
He stated that doctors have known for some time that anestheisa drugs can cause pain.
The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
