Ovarian Cancer Detection Improved With Symptoms Plus Blood Test
June 24, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study, U.S. researchers have stated that early-stage ovarian cancer detection was improved using a new symptoms plus blood test.
The study was conducted on 254 healthy women who were at high-risk for ovarian cancer due to family history. 75 women were also involved, and were about to have surgery to remove the cancer.
The ovarian cancer detection was improved by 20% through the use of this new test. The test helps detect a tumor marker, as well as any new symptoms experienced by the woman.
The study found that when just one of the two tests were used, 60% of early-stage ovarian cancers were picked up.
The two methods together correctly picked up on 90% of the ovarian cancers, and 80% of the early cancers.
According to the American Cancer Society, 21,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and 15,000 women die from the disease.
The study has been published in the online version of the journal Cancer.
