Gene Variant Could Lead To Development Of Alzheimers
June 26, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study published in the journal Cell, a new gene has been discovered which is believed to contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
An international team of scientists conducted the research and revealed their findings on Wednesday.
Researchers published their findings in the June 27 issue of the journal Cell.
The study consisted of scientists from all over the world studying the human gencome. What they found is that a gene variant actually makes people more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.
The variant of the gene CALHM1 allows Alzheimer’s to develop as it makes it easy for brain cells to allow calcium to get inside.
Scientists have stated that this discovery could lead to a major Alzheimer’s breakthrough as they could aim treatments at the gene variant.
Alzheimer’s disease impacts 5.2 million Americans and continues to grow.
