Report Shows Adverse Events Common In California Hospitals

According to a new report released by the California Department of Public Health, California hospitals made some serious errors, or adverse events. during a 10-month period that ended in May. They found that in many cases, doctors made serious mistakes in regards to surgical procedures.

Under a new state law in California, all hospitals need to report any error which resulted in an injury to their patients. By the year 2015, hospitals need to begin posting these errors on the internet.

These erroros that must be reported can be anything from errors with surgeries, medication, etc.

The report looked at errors, officially called adverse events that took place in hospitals. In total, there were 1,002 cases of these adverse events which resulted in serious medical harm to patients.

The Los Angeles Times reported that from the 10-month period ending in May, they found that on 41 occasions, doctors performed the wrong surgical procedure, operating on the incorrect part of the body, or on the wrong patient completely.

During this same 10-month period, there were 145 occasions where a foreign object, such as a medical tool or something else, was actually left inside of a patient at th eend of the surgery.

The California Department of Public Health has thus far issues several fines against hospitals due to these errors.
