FDA Panel Wants Tougher Standards For Diabetes Drugs

July 2, 2008

A government panel for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has come out and stated that diabetes drugs need to be placed under tougher safety standards.. .Washington (dbTechno) - A government panel for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has come out and stated that diabetes drugs need to be placed under tougher safety standards.

The FDA panel voted 14-2 on Wednesday in favor of making new diabetes drugs go through tougher testing.
The tougher testing will result in longer, more in-depth studies to check on diabetes drugs, and make sure they are safe.

This will likely cost the drug manufacturers a great deal of funding, but it will help reduce the number of unforseen health risks in the long-term.

Diabetes experts, cardiologists, and others joined to make the recommendation for change. One of the major aspects of diabetes drugs the panel wants checked include heart risks.

The FDA is not required to follow the advice of the panel, but usually does so. There are over 20 million people in the U.S. with Type 2 diabetes.
