Study Shows Death Rates For HIV Patients Decreasing
July 2, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new report, the death rates for people infected with HIV are decreasing. They have found that people are living longer than ever with HIV.
The authors of the study, published in the July 2 issue of the Journal of the American Medication Association, followed more than 16,000 people from different countries for around 6 years or so.
In that time, 2,571 people infected with HIV died, compared to 235 who would be expected to die in the general population.
What they actually found though is that there was no increased death risk for a person wit h HIV in the first five years of the disease.
This changed when they had the disease for 10 years, as the death rate was higher.
This is the first study though to compare the death rate associated with HIV, to that of the general population.
For the first five years after diagnosis, a person living with HIV has the same risk of dying as a person living in the general population.
