Jalapenos, Not Tomatoes, The Focus Of Salmonella Outbreak

July 5, 2008

According to officials investigating the salmonella outbreak which has sickened over 900 people in the U.S. thus far, the main focus has turned away from tomatoes, and towards jalapeno peppers.Washington (dbTechno) - According to officials investigating the salmonella outbreak which has sickened over 900 people in the U.S. thus far, the main focus has turned away from tomatoes, and towards jalapeno peppers.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has come out and stated that tomatoes are likely not the source of the salmonella outbreak.

Due to the fact that the number infected now stands at 922, with the number of cases continuing to increase, the investigation expanded.

The latest reports point to fresh salsa as to blame for the source of the salmonella outbreak, more specifically, jalapeno peppers in the salsa.

Federal officials are concentrating on fresh salsa that is prepared in restaurants, not canned salsa.

Officials have yet to name any of the restaurants involved, but stated that none are any chains.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the CDC has yet to confirm or deny that jalapeno peppers are the top suspect of the investigation.
