Gender May Contribute To Success Of A Kidney Transplant
July 6, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - A new study has shown that the success of a kidney transplant may depend heavily on your gender.
The study was carried out by researchers at the University Hospital Basel. Researchers were led by Prof. Alois Gratwohl, as they analyzed data fro over 195,000 people in Europe.
All of these people had received kidneys from deceased donors between 1985 and 2004 at over 400 centers in Europe.
What they found was that 1 to 10 yeas after the kidney transplants, those who recieved a female kidney were more likely to experience graft loss.
On the other hand, male kidney recipients were more likely to experienc graft failure.
The biggest risk area was seen when transplanting male kidneys into female kidneys, as the risk of failure in year one went up by 11%.
The conclusion from researchers is for doctors to consider more same-sex transplants. The study was published in The Lancet.
