Doctors Group Recommends Cholesterol Drugs For Young Kids
July 7, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The American Academy of Pediatrics has released new guidelines on Monday, recommending that kids as young as 8-years old be given drugs to help fight cholesterol.
The new guidelines by the very influential doctors group came out on Monday, stating that by giving kids these cholesterol drugs at a young age, it can help fight off future heart problems.
This comes after the doctors have looked at evidence which has showcased that problems such as heart disease began early in life with early damage to the heart.
The doctors believe that if we are more aggressive in treating them while they are in childhood, that they can have a major impact on their health later in life.
They also recomended low-fat milk for 1-year olds, as well as further cholesterol testing.
The treatment would be targeted at kids of at least 8-years old with too much LDL, or bad cholesterol.
They stated that for overweight kids with too little HDL, or good cholesterol, the best course of treatment is to lose weight.
