CDC Says Jalapeno Peppers Caused Salmonella Cases

July 10, 2008

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have increased the number of cases of salmonella to over 1,000 in the U.S., as federal officials now look at jalapeno peppers as a source.Washington (dbTechno) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have increased the number of cases of salmonella to over 1,000 in the U.S., as federal officials now look at jalapeno peppers as a source.

Originally, it was believed that the cause of the salmonella outbreak was consuming raw tomatoes.

This appears to not be the case after all though, as federal officials now believe that one of the sources may be jalapeno peppers, among others.

Since April, the CDC has confirmed 1,017 cases across 41 states in the U.S. as well as Canada.

The CDC released a statement saying “The accumulated data from all investigations indicate that jalapeno peppers caused some illnesses but that they do not explain all illnesses.”

Other sources under investigation include raw tomatoes, fresh serrano peppers, as well as fresh cilantro.
