Bacteria Which Causes Ulcers May Help Protect From Asthma
July 15, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - A bacteria known to be a cause of ulcers as well as stomach cancer has been found to be a possible means of protecting kids from developing asthma.
U.S. researchers have found that kids who are infected with the bacteria are less likely to develop asthma compared directly to kids who are not infected with the bacteria.
The bacteria in question is called Helicobacter pylori, as researchers believe it may be a major reason as to why there has been a rise in childhood asthma.
Teens and kids who were 3 to 19-years old, and carried the bacteria, were found to be 25% less likely to have asthma.
Kids aged 3 to 13-years old who had the bacteria were 59% less likely to develop asthma.
The findings have been reported in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
