July 18, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association have come out with new guidelines on how to handle infant strokes.
What they found was that strokes in infants are far more common than once believed, and have very different symptoms than adult strokes.
The first symptoms of a stroke in a newborn are often seizures which involve just one arm or one leg.
The belief now is that stroke accounts for 10% of seizures in full-term newborns.
The most common risk factors for stroke in children include sickle cell anemia, and heart disease.
Other things can cause strokes as well such as head traumas, infections, and more.
They news release also stated that it is not proper to use standard treatments for adults, on infants.
The risk is greatest for a stroke during the first year of life.
