WHO Warns Asian Nations About Drug-Resistant TB Growth
July 21, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) came out and stated that Asian nations have, to this point, failed to stop the growth of the deadly drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis (TB).
The WHO has stressed that the disease could soon pose a serious threat to the entire Asian region as a whole, putting the health of millions at risk.
The WHO regional office in the Western Pacific Region stated that just 1% of the 150,000 people hit with the multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) have received proper treatment.
This is not good enough, as the Western Pacific Regions have been hit hardest out of any other spot on Earth.
Nations who are at highest risk include Mongolia, the Republic of Korea, China, the Phillippines, and Vietnam.
The WHO press release stated that the majority of these nations lack the proper tools to detect the virus, and do not take action even if they do.
Since the disease is so contagious, just one infected person could cause up to 10 others to be infected.
The WHO is stressing action before it is too late, and our global health is in jeopardy.
