Statins Cut Risk Of Developing Dementia, Memory Loss By 50%
July 29, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study, cholesterol lowering drugs known as statins are highly effective in protecting against dementia, as well as memory loss.
The study was carried out over a period of 5-years, with over 1,500 Mexican Americans taking part. All were around the age of 60 or above, and were all at an increased risk of dementia.
Common risk factors linked to dementia and memory loss include education, smoking, diabetes, etc.
Once they factored all of that in, they found that people who took statins had a 50% lower risk of developing dementia and memory loss.
This comes as more reports are revealed showcasing that blood pressure drugs can actually cut dementia risk.
Though it is not known exactly why the statins are so effective, it is believed that it is because they reduce the levels of hormone insulin.
The study was published in the journal Neurology.
