New Alzheimer’s Drug Shows Promise In Slowing Disease
July 30, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Researchers from Scotland’s University of Aberdeen, working with TauRX Therapeutics have developed a new Alzheimer’s drug which appears to be able to actually slow the progress of the disease.
Researchers carried out a Phase 2 clinical trial with the drug, and plan to begin a Phase 3 trial next year.
For the Phase 2 trial, they tested patients to see how they would respond to the Alzheimer’s drug.
What they found was that out of all those who took the medication, patients saw their cognitive decline decrease by 81% over the course of a year.
This shows great promise that the drug could actually slow down the progression of this terrible disease.
The drug was found to be most effective in the memory-critical parts of the brain.
The drug makes for a new way to try and treat Alzheimer’s, by targeting the tangles in the brain.
Many are calling this the biggest step towards finding a cure for Alzheimer’s ever.
The hope is that if the Phase 3 trial is just as successful next year, the drug could be available by 2012.
The research was presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease in Chicago.
