New Studies Reveal Genes That Increase Schizophrenia Risk
July 30, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Three new studies were published on Wednesday which reveal genes that may lead to an increased risk of developing schizophrenia.
The three studies were published on Wednesday in the journal Nature, and found that the deletion and duplication of certain common genes may increase the risk of the disease.
Schizophrenia is a brain disorder which can force people to go through delusions, as well as hallucinations.
The disorder impacts nearly one in every one-hundred people.
Scientists now believe that genes may lead to nearly 90% of all cases of schizophrenia.
The three studies point to locations on Chromosomes 1, 15, as well as 16 in the genetic code.
Changes in DNA were more frequent for these chromosomes in people with schizophrenia.
Researchers have stated that these findings are key to understanding what causes schizophrenia.
