Pre-Pregnancy Diabetes Linked To Increased Risk Of Birth Defects
July 30, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - A new study has revealed that women who develop diabetes before they become pregnant are three to four more times more likely to have a baby with at least one birth defect.
Researchers looked over data from 30,000 women who gave birth across the U.S. All of the women’s infants had to be taken to birth defect centers.
The report comes from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which compared women with diabetes to women without diabetes.
The birth defects most commonly linked to pregnant women with diabetes included defects with the heart, spine, brain, limbs, kidneys, and more.
This impacts women who are diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes before they actually become pregnant.
The CDC news release touted that birth defects are the leading cause of infant deaths.
The CDC also stated that birth defects imapct 1 out of every 33 infants born.
The study has been published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
