Washington (dbTechno) – The House has passed a bill which will give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) control to regulate tobacco products in the country.
There has been a great deal of opposition to this new bill, including opposition from the White House, as well as President Bush himself.
That did not stop the House from passing the bill though, which was sponsored by Rep. Henry Waxman, a Democrat from California.
The bill passed with a vote of 326 – 102 in favor, with the idea of it to cut down on tobacco use across the country.
The FDA will, with this bill, have authority to monitor tobacco products including ban flavored cigarettes, and other smoking products.
The authority will not be fully extensive though, as they will not be able to have any power over menthol-flavored cigarettes.
The bill will now head to the Senate where it will have to pass there before going to President Bush.
The White House stated on Wednesday that advisers to President George W. Bush will likely recommend a veto of the bill.
