Study Shows Public Bans On Smoking Improve Overall Health
July 31, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that public bans on smoking improve the overall health of people, cutting down on secondhand smoke.
The study was carried out in Scotland as health experts looked over public smoking bans, and what type of impact they had on the health of people.
For the study, researchers took blood and saliva samples from patients when they were admitted to the hospital.
They then looked for any signs that the person was a smoker, or non-smoker and went from there.
What they found was that in the year after Scotland put in place a public ban on smoking, the number of hospital admissions for heart attacks and acute coronary health issues dropped 17%.
The rate decreased even further for people who did not smoke before the ban went into place.
Breaking it down further, non-smokers saw a 20% reduction in their hospital admissions, compared to 14% for smokers.
This backs up the belief of medical experts in the U.S. and around the world that public smoking bans work, and are effective.
