Washington (dbTechno) – According to a new study, womenw ho have high or low thyroid hormone levels may face an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
The study was led by Dr. Zaldy Tan of the Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Hebrew SeniorLife.
For the study, they measured the hormone called thyrotropin in nearly 1,200 healthy men and women.
This particular hormone acts as a regulator for thyroid levels in the body. All of those in the study had an average age fo 71.
What they found was that 209 of those involved in the study developed Alzheimer’s over the course of 13 years.
Women who had the lowest or highest thyroid levels had more than double the risk of developing the disease.
This same increased risk was not, however, seen in men.
The study has been published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
