International AIDS Conference Aims To Find HIV Vaccine
August 3, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Researchers, as well as others interested in helping fight HIV/AIDS have come together in Mexico City for the International AIDS Conference, which aims to pursue the goal of finding an HIV vaccine.
Researchers have been working for years trying to come up with an HIV vaccine which would prove effective.
To this point though, they have unfortunately failed, for a variety of reasons.
Previous attempts at an HIV vaccine have come and gone, with the hope that one would someday be developed to allow people to be protected from the virus.
One of the biggest issues with the HIV virus is that it mutates, meaning that researchers have to change the vaccine year in and year out.
Because of this, there are fewer new drugs beginning clinical trials, as the search for an HIV vaccine has slowed a bit.
The idea behind the International AIDS Conference is to garner a global effort towards finding a vaccine all over again.
Just recently, the United Nations, as well as the World Health Organization, both reported that the number of people living with HIV around the world declined in 2007.
The number of people who are dying from AIDS has also now seemingly hit a stable level.
The idea is that these declines have taken place because of a stronger effort of treatment, and prevention programs.
The hope is that someday soon, an HIV vaccine will prevent these people from every having to catch the virus.
