With FDA Gaining Power Over Tobacco, They Can Protect Kids
August 4, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Just last week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of passing a bill, granting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) power over tobacco products in the country.
The bill has beeh highly-contested, and is being opposed by the Bush Administration, which is threatening a veto.
The bill passed though with an amazing support, as many hope that the FDA, if it does end up gaining the authority, can use the newfound power to help keep tobacco away from kids.
The FDA will have limited authority with the bill, but will be able to stop the tobacco industry from using marketing and sales tools to attract kids towards their products.
Other bonuses expected to come out of this include the fact that the FDA will require tobacco products to have more extensive health warnings, which are also more clear to users.
The FDA could also possibly force certain tobacco products to change ingredients, depending on just how harmful they can be.
Overall the idea behind the move is to further the fight against tobacco, by giving the FDA power to help stop tobacco companies from misleading the public about their products
Whether it manages to fully pass remains to be seen, but it is over the first hurdle.
