Over 30% Of Uninsured Americans Suffering From Chronic Illness
August 5, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - A new report has revealed that one-third of all Americans who do not have health insurance suffer from a chronic illness, and do not receive the medical treatment they desperately need.
The study has been published in the August 5th issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, and looked at uninsured Americans who were all working-age people.
The number of Americans without health insurance stood at 47 million in 2006, which was an increase over the past years.
For the study, researchers interviewed people aged 18 to 64, and took part in the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey.
What they found was that there are 11.4 million Americans of working-age who have a chronic illness, and do not have health insurance.
Breaking it down further, 16.1% suffered from a cardiovascular disease, 15.5% from hypertension, and 16.6% from diabetes.
Nearly 30% of uninsured Americans suffering from a chronic illness did not have anywhere they went for medical care.
This shows a growing problem in the U.S., as 22% of those without insurance had not been to see any health professional in the last 12 months.
Americans living without health insurance are at an increased risk for a chronic illness, and lack the care needed to prevent them.
