Children Who Skip Hours Of Sleep More Likely To Be Obese
August 6, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, children who skip hours of sleep double their overall risk of being overweight, or obese.
The study was carried out by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and looked at 335 children in total.
The basic premise is that children and adults who do not get enough sleep are more likely to snack on junk foods, and also have far less energy, meaning they are less likely to take part in regular exercise.
They found that children are better off in terms of sleeping when they can have a regular time for bedtime, and waking up.
This will allow them to get a far higher quality of sleep over time, as some kids reportedly need as many as 13 hours of sleep each night.
This backs up the long belief that a lack of sleep is linked to obesity, as in the past adults who do not sleep have been more prone to being overweight.
