West Nile Virus Posing A Major Threat In California
August 6, 2008
Los Angeles (dbTechno) - The West Nile virus season is upon us, as every state in the U.S. is on alert. California is at the forefront of it all though, as their risk of contracting the West Nile virus is at a very dangerous level.
California health officials have come out and stated that currently, the risk of contracting West Nile virus is higher than it has been in four years.
The state has confirmed that over 300 mosquito samples, as well as over 500 dead birds have tested positive for West Nile.
The fear is that this could continue to a record number of cases of West Nile virus before the season is all said and done.
The last time California was hit hard by West Nile was back in 2004, when 21 people died, and over 700 contracted the virus.
The peak season for West Nile virus is from August to late September, as people are being warned to avoid being outdoors from dusk to dawn.
Other prevention methods include removing standing water, and using protective clothing, bug repellent to your advantage.
