Boston (dbTechno) – Researchers from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research have reported in a new study that they have found a direct link between weight loss, and long-term success in terms of people being able to control their diabetes.
Researchers tracked the weight patterns of over 2,500 patients who were recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
The idea was to track how much weight they had gained and/or lost during a period of time, and then check how it had an impact on the disease.
They found that some of them lost no weight at all, while others were able to drop over 20 pounds a few months after they were diagnosed.
They followed them for a period of four years, and found that after that time period, those who were able to lose the most weight had better control over their diabetes.
This allowed them to have more control over their blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
This was persistent long-term, even if the weight loss was reversed after 18-months.
By the end of the study, nearly all of those who took part were back at their normal weight.
This study shows though that short-term weight loss, even if it is reversed, can lead to long-term benefits in terms of controlling diabetes.
On average, 20 million people live with type 2 diabetes in the U.S.
The study hsa been published in the Diabetes Care, the American Diabetes Association journal.
