Study Links Moisturizers To Skin Cancer In Mice
August 14, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - A new study published by researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey has found a link between moisturizers and the development of skin cancer in mice.
Researchers from Rutgers University in New Jersey tested four highly common skin moisturizers on mice.
These mice were genetically altered, as they had no hair, and were exposed to high levels of UV rays, which cause cancer.
What scientists found though was pretty alarming, as the skin moisturizers were found to make the skin of the mice more sensitive.
Non-melanoma skin cancer rates increased between 24% to 95% in mice given the moisturizers, compared to mice who were not given them.
Researchers then did the test over, with altered creams, and found that the cancer rates dropped.
This has led many to believe that a link exists between the skin moisturizer creams, and skin cancer.
The four creams looked at in the study included Dermabase, by Paddock Laboratories, Dermovan from Healthpoint Ltd, Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream from Beiersdorf Inc., and Vanicream from Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc.
The study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
