Boston (dbTechno) – According to new national guidelines released by the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF), you should leave your earwax alone.
Earwax is that gross stuff that can build up inside of your ear, and is something that many people try to remove with their finger, a cotton swab, etc.
According to Dr. Peter Roland from the University of Texas Wouthwestern Medical Center in Dallas though, this is not a safe practice.
Roland was the chair of a panel of doctors who were placed in charge of coming up with these new national guidelines.
The new national guidelines aimed to instruct people on the best way to remove earwax.
According to the new guidelines, you should leave your earwax alone. This is because earwax works good by cleaning out your ear. It also helps by protecting and lubricating parts of the ear canal.
The guidelines state that excessive ear wax actually makes its way out of the ear without any help, simply by moving your jaw.
Doctors are recommended to treat impacted earwax when it can cause problems which include symptoms such as pain, itching of the ear, ringing, or hearing loss.
It is advised by the panel that people do not use cotton swabs or ear candling to clean out the earwax on their own.
People who use hearing aids are also recommended to be checked regularly for the buldup of ear wax.
These new guideliens are published in the September issue of the Otolarynology – Head and Neck Surgery.
