Would Lowering Drinking Age To 18 Endanger Health Of College Kids?
August 31, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Recently, the debate has come up as to whether or not the drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18. This comes as 130 presidents of colleges and universities across the U.S. signed an initiative to support the move. Does this put college students at risk though in regards to their health?
As stated, over 130 presidents from various colleges and universities across the U.S. signed a petition this month to change the legal drinking age of 21, down to 18.
This has obviously caused a great uproar among critics, who feel that lowering the drinking age to 18 would only increase the risk of drunken-driving deaths, and more.
The goal of this push is to try to come up with a way to promote responsible drinking.
The belief behind these in support of the push to lower the drinking age is the fact that it could reduce the amount of binge drinking.
The idea is that currently, an under-age college students would load up before going out for a night on the town, by taking part in binge drinking.
By lowering the drinking age to 18, this college student would not have to take part in binge drinking before going out, as they could instead take part in casual drinking at their destination.
This is not the view though of critics, who state that lowering the drinking age to 18 would lead to more drunken-driving deaths, and would show that many do not care about the kids who die from alcohol abuse.
There have been ideas that have come up, such as a drinking license for college students to obtain by taking classes, and such.
The debate is far from over, as there are many views from both sides still to come out.
In the end though, a decision will have to be made on how this will truly impact the health of thousands of college students across the U.S.
