Study Links Older Dads To Bipolar Disorder In Kids
September 2, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new Swedish study published in the Archives of Psychiatry, children who have older fathers are more likely to develop bipolar disorder.
The study carried out by Swedish researchers looked at a total of 13,428 patients who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
The controls they used in the study had to do with the age of the kid’s mother, number of siblings, family history, etc.
What they found was that there was a clear and distinct link between the development of bipolar disorder, and the age of the child’s father.
They found that children of fathers who were 55-years old and up were 1.37-times more likely to develop bipolar disorder.
This compares directly to children who have fathers between the ages of 20 to 24.
The increased risk begins when the father is older than 29, and peaks at 55-years old.
Beyond bipolar disorder, this link has also been found with utism and schizophrenia as well.
