Fewer Medical Students In US Choosing Primary Care
September 10, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study, fewer medical students in the U.S. are going to plan a career as a primary care doctor.
The study was done in the form of a survey, led by Karen Hauer of the University of California, San Francisco.
The survey was done with 1,117 medical students a year ago, and focused on what they were planning to do in regards to a future career.
Researchers found that out of the entire group, only 24 wanted to plan a career as a primary care doctor.
On top of that, 23% of the students, or over 250 stated that they wanted to focus on a career in internal medicine.
Primary care doctors are going to be in shortage if this continues.
Students opted against that pland ue to low salaries, and a very demanding job overall.
The report was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
