Washington (dbTechno) – Gastric bypass surgery is very popular, and is a procedure which works by allowing your body to function properly, while cutting down on your hunger. This causes the majority of obese people to shed a great amount of weight, but for some, it doesn’t work that way.
Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco carried out a study on 310 people in total.
The goal of the study was to see just how effective gastric bypass surgery was on a wide array of individuals.
At the start of the study, all of the patients involved had a BMI of 52.
For the record, if you have a BMI of 40 or above you are normally considered morbidly obese.
They followed them for a year after the surgery, and found that the majority dropped 60% of their excess body weight.
This was not the case for all though, as 12.3% were unable to have any big weight loss.
They looked into a variety of factors as to why this was the case.
What they found was that diabetes, and having a larger stomach pouch were the reasons for poor weight loss.
The study shows that patients who have to take insulin actually promote fat and cholesterol build-up.
Changing up your medication could fix this though promptly.
The study has been published in the Archives of Surgery.
