(Update 2) FDA Slammed For Defending Use Of BPA In Plastics
September 19, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has had a rough week to say the least, as many researchers and major groups across the U.S. have slammed the FDA for continuing to defend the use of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in plastics.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a very common chemical that is found in a wide variety of our plastic products that we use on a daily basis.
These plastic products can be baby bottles, bowls, cups, water bottles, and more.
A recently released human study put out just this week has linked levels of bisphenol A to the development of diabetes and heart disease in adults.
The levels of bisphenol A looked at in the study would be considered safe levels according to the FDA.
Researchers are criticizing the FDA for coming to the conclusion that regular exposure to bisphenol A is perfectly safe for infants, as well as adults.
The belief of many experts is that bisphenol A is not safe at all for infants, as they are at the highest level of exposure due to them drinking from plastic baby bottles.
The FDA continues to stand by their assertion though that at its current levels, bisphenol A is perfectly safe.
Experts have argued though that the FDA came to this conclusion without fully looking at studies which revealed negatives in regards to what bisphenol A exposure did to animals in studies.
The debate wages on over the use of bisphenol A.
