Washington (dbTechno) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has come out and stated that statin cholesterol drugs do not increase the risk of developing Lou Gehrig’s disease.
The FDA carried out a review of 41 long-term clinical trials to try and see if there was any link between the popular statin cholesterol drugs, and Lou Gehrig’s disease.
This took place after they had received many reports, much higher than expected, in regards to people developing the disease.
The FDA found that 9 out of the 64,000 patients looked at in the study actually developed Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS.
This compared to 10 out of 56,000 patients who received a placebo instead of the statins.
The most popular statin cholesterol drugs include Lipitor from Pfizer, as well as Crestor from AstraZeneca Plc.
What this means is that there is no link at all between the disease, and patients treated with statins.
The report has been published in the journal Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety.
