Parents Who Smoke May Make Kids Addicted To Nicotine
September 30, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Parents who smoke may be turning their kids into nicotine addicts without even knowing it, according to Canadian researchers.
The research was led by Dr. Jennifer O’Loughlin of the Univerity of Montreal, and focused on exposure to second-hand smoke, and what it does to kids.
What they found was that the more kids are exposed to second-hand smoke, the more likely they are to be addicted to nicotine in the long run, even if they never smoked themselves.
The study was carried out on 1,800 children who were between the ages of 10 and 12-years old.
5% of those in the study stated to researchers that they had never smoked.
These same kids though had all of the symptoms of being dependent on nicotine.
This has led them to believe that exposure to second-hand smoke may make people addicted to nicotine without even realizing it.
The study has been published in the journal Addictive Behaviors.
