Study Shows Circumcision Doesn’t Prevent HIV In Gay Men
October 8, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - It has long been believed that circumcision can slow the spread of HIV, and the AIDS virus between men and women. A new study though has found that circumcision does not give the same benefit for gay men.
When a man and a woman take part in intercourse, it has been proven that circumcision can be something that helps stop the spread of AIDS.
The new study, led by Gregorio Millett of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have found that this benefit is not the same for all people.
They have found that gay men who were circumcised did not get the same benefit.
The study was based on data analysis from 15 earlier studies which included a total of roughly 54,000 homosexual men.
They found that circumcised gay men were 14% less likely to be infected with the AIDS virus compared to men who were not circumcised.
This is a reduction, but it is so low that it had virtually no impact on the spread between these men.
The study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
