Study Links Drinking Alcohol To Shrinking Of The Brain

Washington (dbTechno) - A new study published in the journal Archives of Neurology has found that drinking alcohol can cause your brain to shrink very quickly.

Researchers from Wellesley College in Massachusetts carried out the study on 1,839 adults who had an average age of 60.  The study was conducted from 1999 to 2001.  Each of those who took part in the study had to go through an MRI as well as an overall health examination.

On top of that, they also had to report on many other factors including how much alcohol they drank, their level of education, etc.

What they found was a direct link between alcohol consumption and an overall shrinking of the brain.

The more alcohol they consumed, the smaller his or her brain was found to be in regards to total brain volume.

It is known that the overall volume of the brain decreases with age, but alcohol can speed up the process.

Men were found to be more likely thanw omen to be moderate to heavy drinkers.

The other interesting note though was that the link between brain volume and alcohol consumption was stronger in women.
