Report Says Many Patients Not Satisfied With Hospital Care
October 30, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Harvard researchers have put out a new report which has revealed that many patients in U.S. hospitals are not satisfied with the care that they are receiving.
This was the first national survey conducted to check on how patients felt their experience and care went at the hospital.
The author of the study Dr. Ashish K. Jha worked with researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health to try and gather information on how patients felt their care went.
For the study, the team reviewed data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Products and Systems survey.
They looked at 4,032 hospitals which report overall quality of care, looking at 2,429 patients.
Overall, they represented a total of over 60% of the hospitals in the U.S.
What they found though was that one-third of all of the patients gave very low ratings to hospitals in regards to how they handled pain.
On top of that, one-fifth gave hospitals very low ratings in terms of how well they communicated with the patient when he or she was being discharged.
67.4% of patients stated that they would recommend the hospital they went to.
The study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
