Washington (dbTechno) – A new study has revealed that a certain blood protein linked to inflammation is not a cause of heart attacks or strokes.
Researchers were led by Dr. Borge Nordestgaard of Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, and looked at how this protein, the C-reactive protein, played a role in heart attacks or stroke.
Studies in the past have linked high levels of this protein to an elevated risk of heart attack and stroke.
Many drug companies have gone as far as to produce drugs which reduce the levels of the certain protein.
The study was conducted using genetic testing on 50,000 peopl ein Denmark.
They wanted to see if those who naturally had higher levels of the protein carried the increased risk.
They found that even if you have higih levels of the protein, you have the same risk of heart attack or stroke as those who had low levels.
The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
