Washington (dbTechno) – Researchers have found that the best treatment for kids suffering from anxiety disorders is a combination of cognitive behavior therapy, and the antidepressant sertraline, Zoloft
Researchers from Columbia University in New York carried out a study on a group of 488 children between the ages of 7 and 17.
The idea behind it was to put them on treatment for their anxiety disorders for 12 weeks.
They were put into 4 groups with the kids getting the combo therapy, some getting either the cognitive behavior therapy alone, or Zoloft, while the fourth group received a placebo.
The drugs were found to be effective on their own, but the combination of the two worked best.
They found that 81% of the kids who received the combo treatment of Zoloft and the cognitive behavior therapy saw improvement.
For those with just the cognitive behavior therapy, 60% showed improvement, compared to 55% on Zoloft alone.
Only 24% of the kids on the placebo showed improvement.
The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
