Obesity To Blame For 23 Million Americans With Diabetes
October 31, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a huge spike in the number of diabetes cases in the U.S., and it appears that obesity may be to blame.
The CDC stated that over the past decade, the diagnosis rate for diabetes has doubled.
The rate jumped from 4.8 per 1,000 people from 1995 to 1997, to 9.1 per 1,000 people from 2005 to 2007.
All of the data in the study came from theCDC’s Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System.
They broke it down by state, with the South doing the worst overall.
The lowest state was West Virginia, which had a rate of diabetes diagnosis at 12.7 per 1,000 people. Minnesota was the best with 5 per 1,000 people.
90% of the cases of diabetes are type 2 diabetes, with the overall number now being 23.6 million American adults and kids with the disease.
The reason for the rise in diabetes is believed to be blamed on obesity, as well as physical inactivity.
The author of the study, Karen Kirtland of the CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation, stated lifestyle alterations need to be made to reverse this trend.
The study was published in the October 31 issue of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
