(Update 1) Statins Cut Heart Attack, Stroke Risk In All Adults
November 10, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study released by Boston researchers, statins can greatly reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and clogged arteries even in older adults who do not have high cholesterol and are considered to be healthy.
The study was carried out by researchers from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
For the study, they screened around 18,000 patients for any type of evidence that they were suffering from cardiovascular disease.
These tests aimed to try and pick up on things regular cholesterol tests may have missed out on.
They then gave half of the patients a preventive dose of a statin, and the other half a placebo.
What they found was that in the patients who received the statin, their risk of heart attack and stroke was cut by 50%.
The study utilized the cholesterol drug Crestor from the drug maker AstraZeneca.
Doctors have now stated that with this study, more than one million patients who were before not considered to be right for statins, may now want to take them.
The findings were presented in New Orleans at the American Heart Association convention.
