C. Difficile, Cause Of Diarrhea, Common In U.S. Hospitals
November 11, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Researchers have come out and stated that Clostridium difficile or C. difficile, which causes the development of diarrhea, is actually very common.
The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology put out a new report, stating that the bacteria is very common in hospitals.
They carried out the study using 12,000 researchers who took data from one day between May and August 2008.
The data was focused on all patients diagnosed with C. difficile from a total of nearly 650 hospitals.
What they found was that 13 out of every 1,000 hospital patients were infected with the C. difficile bacteria, a very high number.
This is around 15 to 20 times greater than researchers thought the number was in the past.
Their study on the bacteria is going to be published in the American Journal of Infection Control.

What does this say about our hospitals? I have concern about how ICU and CCU patients are taken care of. I had a family member who went without being fed for over 12 hours. I’m glad I wasn’t there to here this news, because I’m not sure of how I might have reacted.
