(Update 1) C. Difficile Bacteria Very Common In U.S. Hospitals
November 12, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - A new report has revealed that a potentially deadly bacteria known as Clostridium difficile, or C. difficile is far more common in U.S. hospitals than previously thought.
The report was released by Dr. William Jarvis and his team of researchers.
For the study, they looked over roughly 650 different hospitals in the U.S. to see how common the bacteria was.
What they found was that roughly 13 out of every 1,000 hospitalized patients are carrying the potentially deadly bacteria.
This bacteria, C. difficile, can cause severe diarrhea, as well as major intestinal problems.
The rate at which the bacteria is now seen in hospitals is 20 times greater than previously estimated.
The bacteria, which is quite common in U.S. hospitals now, is the cause of roughly 300 patient deaths every day nationwide.
