Cholesterol Drug Rosuvastatin Cuts Heart Attack Risk In Half
November 17, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - A drug which is used to fight high cholesterol, rosuvastatin (Crestor) has also been found to actually cut the risk of heart attack in half for most people.
The Jupiter clinical trial found that the cholesterol-lowering drug was able to reduce the risk of heart attack, coronary artery disease, stroke, and overall death.
While it was able to cut the risk of heart attack and such in half, it reduced the overall death risk by nearly 20% in all patients.
The study focused on a total of 17,000 people, and is now leading doctors to possibly prescribing these statins to those who do not even have high cholesterol.
The study has found that if we increase the use of statins, we can prevent a variety of heart troubles.
The study focused on patients with high levels of a protein known as the C-reactive protein or CRP.
This protein increases the risk of heart troubles due to speeding up diseases in the arteries.
The study found that in these patients, who did not have high cholesterol, the rosuvastatins were able to reduce the risks as mentioned above.
More research will be needed to check on long-term side effects and such.
